The absorption of Jewish converts into Christian society made it difficult to know who actually had Jewish ancestry, and thus led in later years to the falsification of genealogies together with ample possibilities of blackmail once Jewish ancestry became a cause of family disgrace. If, in strict terms of canon law, baptism had wiped away the impediments which Jews had suffered, in reality hatred of the converts and their success was clearly expressed in Pedro Sarmiento’s Sentencia-Estatuto of 1449, which stated that Jews and their baptized descendants remained Jews, without the right to accede to posts to which their abilities entitled them, a view diametrically opposed to the Christian one, according to which baptism did in fact create a new person.
At this time the New Christians were the victims of hatred for social and economic reasons because, just as in Spain, they were often tax farmers or tax collectors, though the hatred was expressed through accusations against the genuineness of their Christian behaviour. A secret investigation did indeed reveal that Judaizing was widely practised among them. Unlike his father, who was influenced by varying pressures for and against the New Christians, João III was hostile to them. In 1531 he, also, asked the Pope for a bull to establish a State Inquisition.
