Nevertheless, even in those cases, I am sure that something exists. He turns next to critique limited or relative skepticism, one that would question whether I myself exist [I, 89]. To even raise that question, he points out, is to treat myself as an object and make existence a predicate which may or may not be attributed to that object. (Note, In his Metaphysical Journal, Marcel takes a different tack and makes the logical point that total skepticism self-destructs for if the skepticism is total than it must also be just as skeptical of any proposed criterion of existence (MJ, 320).

30 Commentary on Marcel’s Mystery of Being I must confess I do not understand just what Marcel’s argument is here. For him to speak of the reflecting consciousness passing beyond or transcending the reflected on consciousness is misleading since the self which reflects and the self reflected on are not two selves, he insists later, but different features of “a single lived reality” [I, 61]. Perhaps a clue to what he has in mind is that he seems to identify the view that consciousness is a mere mirror or representation of the body with epiphenomenalism, a position which claims that consciousness is a “mere surface encrustation on matter” [I, 52].

In order for me to communicate with my physical therapist or surgeon, I have to consider my body as they do, namely as an object, (even though it is really impossible to detach it from myself ). That is the point of his reference here to truth and the intelligible milieu of Chapter 4 [I, 104]. In order to communicate with each other, people must be together in a common truth seeking milieu and that means they must adopt much the same way of looking at things, which in this case means viewing my body as an object.
