The men were small, with broad shoulders, and long black hair that covered their eyes. Acutely intrigued by these people from what he called β€œthe land of mystery,” the aviator let himself be carried away in his diary.

Whalers filled holds with baleen, spermaceti oil, and ambergris; traders gathered sandalwood, tortoise shell, beche de mer, oysters, and pearl. ” Indeed, around the turn of the century, a series of world fairs and expositions in the US were still showcasing Asia mainly as a region of unimaginable riches. Beginning with the Centennial Exposition, for example, the Japanese entered the American imagination as an artistic people that seemed particularly gifted in shaping precious materials. In Philadelphia, and at several subsequent exhibitions, millions of Americans strolled through Japanese exhibits overflowing with priceless lacquered ware, porcelains, bronzes, silks, and embroideries.

As early as the 1850s, for instance, this was exactly how popular American magazines were referring to the newly opened Chinese and Japanese empires across the Pacific. The American designation did more, however, than ensure geographical rectification. It also hinted at a potential process of continuity in US history. ’ It contained, in other words, the promise of yet another boundless frontier. That became most obvious after the Spanish-American War of 1898, when the US molded the Pacific island groups of Hawaii, Samoa, and the Philippines into formal colonies.
