Despite these problems it is important to recognize that the majority of bereaved people are resilient and come through the process of grieving without lasting damage to their physical or mental health.

This approach has been adopted in several studies of bereaved people. For example, seventy-two East London widows were interviewed by Peter Marris on average two years after they had been bereaved; thirty-one (43 per cent) thought that their general health was now worse than it had been before bereavement (Marris, 1958). In another study by Hobson (1964), a similar proportion of widows (seventeen out of forty) from an English market town made the same assertion. According to both these studies the number of complaints attributed to bereavement was very large.
