I was terrified at the possibility I might drop the Torah and be visited with a terrible punishment, maybe fasting for a year, for the desecration. I made it to the bemah and managed my solo chant of the portion of the week without a major stumble. As the service concluded, I stood with the new rabbi at the front of the congregation. I was a pretty good speech writer, and my memorized comments went well. The rabbi began his response, and I had the hopeful thought, maybe now, maybe this is it.  .

I was afraid of having to go up in front of everyone, so baptism was the last thing in the world I wanted to do. I would talk to God about this, but since I already knew based on scripture that God wanted me to be baptized, I felt intense guilt for not following his commandment. In this sense, talking to God was like having a fake conversation with a person you know. In your head, you can visualize asking them something and you can imagine their response based off of what you already know about them.

With other questions, I would feel my emotions go one way or another, and I took that to mean that God was telling me something. Not this time; I felt no answer. The more I started thinking about these issues, the more they started to depress me. I looked at the story of Adam and Eve and how Eve received most of the punishment, even though her crime was the same as Adam’s. She just ate first, and that was somehow enough to make all women subservient to men. Then I thought about different stories in the Bible.
