The Alpine Flower collections each representing the plants found in the Bulgarian mountain massive were the most interesting part of the Botanical Gardens. Special emphasis was placed on endemic and rare species. The Park also had excellent specimens of the indigenous trees in Bulgaria. The Director of the Garden, a German, was an excellent professional gardener, as well as being a good botanist. I spent several hours with him and he gave me a guided botanical tour, that proved to be invaluable to me when I later ventured out alone.
On our trip we went to the Rila and Pirin mountains, the Rhodope range, Plovdiv, Tatar Pozardjik, Drenovo, Tirnovo, Kazanlik, Shoumen, Burgas, Varna, Pleven and then returned to Sofia. Climbing the high mountains was the most exciting part of the trip. We went up to the Tcherni Vrach (2286 m), in the Pirins, to the Vikhren (2915m), and in the Rhodopes to the Mussala (2925m) the highest point in the Balkans. The wild and the yet untouched virginal splendor of these mountains impressed me as much as the beauty of the flora.
