She was right, of course. I was much too anxious and rigid with her, and had not the skills or personal development myself to convey concerns without being and sounding critical. I completely overlooked the loss to her of her previous, much-valued supervisor. In the end, I unconsciously created a crisis that she felt as an attack through the re-accreditation report. Our ending eventually leaned on what had been good between us, and what was courageous in each of us. We did explore her “mother transferences” to me, and my anxieties, and my way of being careful about expressing my concerns.
Over a period of time, I became concerned about a supervisee, who blamed her clients for leaving therapy prematurely, and had what I eventually called a “combative style” with them. I tried to raise the issue with her. She did not see there was a problem. As we started to talk about it, we wrestled with our increasingly differing perceptions of her approach to her work and to supervision. My concerns grew, and I accepted that I had not given her enough honest feedback as they arose. She would not engage with the feedback when I did so, even though I then offered her the chance to read my notes of our supervision sessions, which recorded issues I had raised month by month.
We examined these issues and idealizations, but not in the depth I might do now. The agency became a source of frustration to her, primarily through the attitudes of older counsellors to her and to the young people it served. She stayed at the agency and with me for three years. The match between our styles was good, and we each enjoyed learning as we developed alongside the other. She was not on an ongoing course, so I did not learn at that stage the necessary skills of writing reports; nor did I test how transferable were my existing competencies in assessing practice.
